Great posting.

I'm just wondering how does running over one hydrant screw up a whole water system for 700k people? Aren't they seperate from the main water supply?

Doesn't make sense.

But I guess this reporting is the best one can expect from the AJC/WSB.

The real question is where was Dekalb's social media outreach? Where was the website notification? You couldn't even get anyone on the phone to tell you why there was no water coming out of your kitchen sink.

Local governments are behind on social media outreach.

DeKalb water update: Residents remain under boil water advisory (7.27.2015)

"County officials said in an email Sunday afternoon that “although water pressure in the system is returning to normal conditions, a boil water advisory remains in effect until further notice. In an abundance of caution for our citizens and to protect the public from any potential health hazards, citizens are advised to boil all water prior to use for drinking, cooking or preparing baby food. The water should be boiled for at least one minute after reaching a rolling boil.”
The boil water advisory is in effect countywide.

What’s next?
The county has asked residents to limit their water use to “basic needs” until Monday afternoon.
Officials are expected to update the boil water advisory later Monday after getting the results from water quality tests..."

Exactly. My wife finally got someone on the phone after 40 minutes of waiting on Sunday, and he didn't even mention the second water main break until she mentioned that we had lost water a second time. Their website had zero information, and even the payment website (to verify that we'd paid for our service) didn't recognize our customer number. A Twitter account with timely updates, service maps, and an estimated reconnection schedule would have saved alot of people alot of trouble.
