I am moving to Atlanta from DC and I am considering working for CVS or Walgreens. I currently work for Safeway which is like another Publix. I was wondering if there were any CVS or Walgreens pharmacists out there that could give me an ideal what you and your co pharmacists schedules are like in an store that is open from 8AM to 10PM and any 24 hour store.

Thanks

I'm not a pharmacist but I am a manager at CVS and our RX hours are from 8AM-10PM on Mon-Fri, 8AM-6PM on Sat and 10AM-6PM on Sun. Our PIC and co-pharmacist rotate schedules. Here's an ideal weekly schedule:

Pharmacist A:
Sun:10am-6pm
Monff
Tueff
Wed:8am-10pm
Thu:8m-10pm
Fri: off
Satff

Pharmacist B:
Sunff
Mon:8am-10pm
Tue:8am-10pm
Wedff
Thuff
Fri:8am-10pm
Sat:8am-6pm

Wow they work from 8am to 10pm, that is 14 hours and I assume they don't even get a break. I don't know about that.

I'm not so sure I'm thrilled to learn that the guy responsible for dispensing my meds is pulling 14 hour shifts.........

I was a CVS store manager for 12 years. The pharmacists schedules have always been that way. They are lucky if they can use a bathroom when necessary! I have teched for my pharmacists many times. When I started with CVS, I lived in CT. Was moved here by the company in 1996. I am glad to be out of those days and I know it has only gotten worse!

Don't they have to get breaks by federal and state law?

Some pharmacists have techs working with them. 14 hours comon' that's cake walk, to real folks (military and civilian pharmacists and other service members) that work well beyond that amount of time and still perform their duties to the T. HONOR COURAGE COMMITMENT

Pharmacists are salaried employees, as are the store managers. They don't punch a time clock, it is assumed they get lunch! That doesn't always happen. As a manager I was paid for 45 hours, I can tell you, it was rare that I worked 45, I usually did at least 50 a week. I ran a mall store in Ct. At Christmas time, I spent without exxageration 90 hours a week in my store! We would do overnights to remerchandise and cook breakfast in the break room. After being transferred here, it was the same thing. There were only 9 CVS stores in the Atlanta area when they were expanding. I did 3 more years after moving here. That was enough for me. People get burned out with that kind of schedule after a while.

A few of my friends are pharmacists in the retail industry (CVS, Walgreens, Walmart, etc). They say the job is very stressful and quite tedious. And the hours aren't great either. On the plus side, there is a ton of job security and the pay is great ($100k+ in Florida).

One of them actually hated it so much, he quit to open an ice cream store in FL. But he wasn't making much money so he had to go back into retail pharmacy.
