We have a couple of huge hickory trees in our backyard. Consequently, we also have a lot of green and brown hickory nuts all over the yard now. Are they edible? I don't think I've ever seen hickory nuts for sale anywhere, and the squirrels don't seem interested in them, but my neighbor said we could eat them. If so, can you eat both the brown and the green ones?

Yes, you can eat them. They are a little bitter but very edible. The brown hulled ones are more dried out. The green ones you may want to let dry out or may give you a belly ache. I remember as a kid saving some hickory nuts until a good sunny day in February and getting outside and cracking and eating some nuts. Felt good to get outside after those cold winter days....Memories!!

They are very tasty, but have a very hard shell and the nut meat is sparse.

Thank you both. I am going out with a bag to start gathering. From what I can tell though luckysnap, the nut itself appears to be pretty good sized. Certainly bigger than a peanut or almond.

Why not add them to a fire or bbq? They make hickory flavored stuff right?? I don't see why you couldn't use them there...

Thumbs up Edible Hickory Nuts

They are edible, the main problem is getting them out of the shell, have you tried?? We did, and I know now why the squirrels are not interested. My husband said he ate them as a child, and if you eat to much you will get a bellyache. I suggested roasting them in the shells, and maybe then they would be easier to deshell. The inside looks like a cross between a walnut and a pecan, but the inner parts are almost as hard as the out shell, making it very difficult to get the meat out of them. Let me know if you have any more luck than we did, I did eat a few and the flavor is very mild.

Patbcox, after reading your post I had a major "Duh" moment. I thought that what I saw when I peeled away the hard dark brown shell was the nut. Now I know why my neighbor made the references to hammers. Maybe I'll just smash one to try it.
