here's what i want to know: why wasn't it socialism when Republicans had solid control of everything? They've always supported a graduated income tax & suddenly an increase of 3% in the highest marginal rate is socialism? wow.

and all the other inequities -- i mean, I don't have kids, and I was talking to a friend whose job title is the same and presumably makes roughly the same. But he had 4 kids & a mortgage, neither of which I had at the time. I paid 5 times as much federal income tax as he did! Why didn't they throw out the mortgage deduction & the kid deduction so these people's share of the government won't be subsidized by others. If you take the per-capita government spending at the local, state, & federal levels (and exlude the fact that business also pays & benefits -- just per-capita), I pay my fair share at all three levels, meaning I pay more than I get in benefits. That's outrageous! Also, 70% of my property taxes go to support the schools, and Georgia is a wholly Republican state. Why?? Is it because Republicans are hard-core socialists? A bunch of lazy welfare queens expecting the rest of us to support them?! I live in Roswell in what I've heard is the second most Republican-leaning Congressional district in the US. So if there's anywhere where I shouldn't be paying for others' kids, it's here.

It would appear they are socialists... or is it because it's only socialism when you're losing an election badly & think throwing out loaded, hot-button words will help? hmm...

btw, I see some calling for the moderator to close this thread... but I personally would love an explanation. I'm honestly confused here.

Chavez is a socialist! Govt. control/ownership of everything. With the bailout, fanny and freddy, banks, auto makers are next (probably in the next week or two), windfall profits on oil, etc. We're definately heading there. Rumbling of 401K's are coming into the picture as well.

Businesses don't pay taxes, they pass them off to the consumer.

It is rather frightening that so many of you are demanding a 'lock down' of someone's unpopular (and sublimely amusing) point of view. Welcome to the age of the 'Fairness Doctrine'. God save us all.

I was thinking the same thing, Lovin. The OP has actually backed up his original statement.

And Western Europe really is socialist people.

Now that my rights have been restored...

Why are the Americans so afraid of socialism. It must be because of its association with the U.S.S.R. Communism is an extreme form of socialism, but even that is accepted in Europe - Italy just elected a former communist as president.

Europe is elated that America is finally accepting a social democrat as president. There were celebrations in my hometown of Middlesbrough, UK. America has finally entered the 21st Century. Socialism is the way of the future, and it is the most modern form of society.

Socialism has done wonders for Western Europe. Health care is free in Britian! How does that compare to the United States? Our mass transport is excellent. Our colleges are affordable, if not free. Our public schooling is great, and we have lower poverty levels than America.

But this is a tangent. I am wondering why a progressive and modern city like Atlanta would have such reactions to this web site. I thought that Atlanta would be happy to see a social democrat in office, and I am suprised at the reactions. America has turned left of centre, and I thought Atlantans would be celebrating this.

I reviewed this thread, and see no reason to close it down...just yet.
The Original poster DID NOT attack anyone, insult anyone, nor infringe in any way against any of City-Data's ToS (Terms of Service)....but sharing his/ her views for debate.
We are all adults here (I hope), to debate on the "why" and "why not's".
Right?
Just because one has different opinions and outlook on things doesn't mean that a thread has to be shut down, all because other members don't share that same view. (Hint: It's called (political) "DIVERSITY" and there are always other threads to post in, if this one is not "up to snuff" ! )

So....that said, remember to follow the City-Data's ToS (Terms of Service), please.

Here's what I thought about the Original Posters post (and my own personal view point to it):

Western European social democrats are socialist. And things are much better there than they are here. Access to health care for everyone, great schools, great mass transport. It will really help bring America into the 21st Century, and I am glad it is finally here.

But how will the new America affect this great city? Poverty will definitely go down. But anyone else wonder how it will change?
Wow.....you are trying to "educate" me on my own country here (Germany)....LOL.
And, sorry, I don't agree with you at all !

Socialists advocate and strive for the creation of a so called egalitarian society, which distributes wealth and power more evenly.
And THAT, it definitely not the case in Germany or Europe, by any means.
Yes, we do have access to health care for everyone, great schools, great mass transport. BUT, all of those things come with a hefty price tag to be supported.
For example: Our sales tax over there (in Germany) is 19 % on non-food items, and 7 % on food items !!!
And don't get me started on the gas prices over there....(I call it "taxed to death")
Now everyone has to pay taxes/ a set fee for every radio and tv one has in their homes or cars !
And that's "GOOD" ?????

Also, the German Healthcare System changed radically, and one has a big chunk of "out of pocket expenses" when medical help is needed.
Look at Germany's unemployment rate, as well as people living in poverty. And, after you will be aware of those numbers, it's all self explanatory.
So, this "would" be a good thing to implement here in and for the USA ?
I am really not so sure or certain about it, nor do I think it would work or could be done since social, political and health care structures (amongst many other things) are on a different layout within this country itself......

I sure hope, that no matter what the "new" government has planned for the USA, it will be drastic in a good way, and improve the social, infrastructure and budget for every city and town here, as well as improving life for it's people.
At the end, I really don't care what this leadership or political preference this would be called.....as long as it shows results, and gets us out of the "slump" we are in....I am so okay with and all for it.
