My family is looking for some good charity opportunities either to volunteer with or donate to or both. We have some money leftover in our budget that we would like to give (less than $500) and need some ideas....

I would love to get involved with something where we can buy T-day meals or help out with Xmas gifts for less fortunate families.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Why don't you do both and check out Hosea Feed the Hungry, with a turner field thanksgiving day meal op for thousands. As of late this year has seen a contraction in giving.

On this note I would like to encourage everyone who does want to donate to attempt to do this year round. This should not be something done only in the last two months of the year so it makes you feel good (not directed towards anyone in particular). This is my personal opinion and my behavior reflects it.

While it's not local, I always try to donate to the Best Friends Animal Society in Utah. This time of year donations to shelters and sanctuaries like this drop off a great deal, and this particular one is known for doing lots of great stuff for all sorts of animals.

If you have time to read through it as there's lots of info, here's their site: Best Friends Animal Society Home Page

Our troops in Iraq and Afganistan would love to get "care" Packages.Check with the VFW or the American legion, or especially the USO.

A fun family volunteer activity is to go to the Atlanta Community Food Bank and participate in their product recovery. You can schedule a two hour shift most weeknights - you sort canned goods that have been donated into various categories then pack them up. It is a well organized, productive evening activity and perfect for anyone over eight years old. My kids LOVE to go!
