I will be going to Dragon Con labor day weekend and so my plan it to drive to north ATL and leave my car at an OTP Marta station like Dunwoody. Take Marta to Arts station and walk the 1/3rd of a mile to the W Atlanta Midtown. In the mornings I plan to use the hotel transportation to get to the con. Then at night like midnightish probably I plan to take the train from Peachtree Center to Arts station and walk to the hotel. Is this a safe area to do that? Midtown station is to the south of the hotel but further away than Arts is. Any help would be appreciated. Also anyone happening to be going to the con and staying at the W let me know and we can try to travel together. Strength in numbers and all that.

I would say it is absolutely safe. Just remember that you are in a city and pay attention to your surroundings.

ETA: Arts Center is much closer than Midtown. The walk from Arts Center station to the W is not bad at all. A little hilly on 15th St, but otherwise easy.

Dress like a Klingon and take one of those sword thingies they use with you and chances are you'll be left alone.

Exactly. You really have nothing to worry about. Just keep your eyes open, and you'll be fine. The area the W is in is pretty busy around Midnight, as there is a very popular bar district only two blocks away.

You are going to have a blast! Wait until you see how all the attendees practically "take over" the area around Peachtree Center. Bring your camera!

Totally and completely safe. Just make sure you go to the paid part of the garage, or they will tow you.

Will this be your first time dealing with MARTA?

Yea this will be my first time in Atlanta at all. My plan was to buy a card from the vending machine and by a 4 day pass for $12 and have it loaded onto it. That a good idea? Also thanks to everyone who has already responded. Great info. :-)
