They're pretty common in suburbs of PA, NJ, NY, CT. Some depts up here are even hybrid, employing a paid 24/7 skeleton crew and paging volunteers to respond to fire/emergencies.

Don't notice it much in the Atlanta area. I would think that could save local municipalities quite a bit of money.

Unlike in high tax states like NY, NJ, MA, CT where you have many towns with volunteer fire depts and part time police (while the real estate taxes are through the roof), in the Atlanta area all the emergency services are professional county or city depts.

Personally, when I lived in MA I specifically chose a town with a full time professional fire dept. As brave and well intentioned as the courageous people are who man volunteer depts, they are still volunteers and I don't want the difference between dying and living to be based on how quickly someone in their personal car makes it to a fire. That's not where you save money.

All the volunteer agencies seem to be outside of the 18 county metro area. I live in north burbs. I know that alot of the mountain communities are volunteer. Some have a small portion of paid, then the rest are volunteer.

I remember reading Mountain Park, the small municipality adjacent to Roswell, has an all-volunteer fire department. There may be others too that I don't know about.
