My wife and I are moving with our three kids to Dacula/Auburn area. They are 5, 2 and 1 month old. I have researched the schools, area and all else there is on the internet, but I am wondering more about activities for the kids; i.e., sports, church functions and city sponsored group activities. We are moving from Hilliard, Ohio, and the city does an excellent job there of community functions (holidays- 4th of July and Christmas are fun events for all, as well as community days- garage sales, city days (festivals and farmer markets), and free library programs about everyday of the year, just to name a few. I was just wondering if there are any programs that stick out in these areas.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Also, does it ever snow.... and if so, how much around Christmas time. For that, believe it or not, will be the thing that I miss the most!

Gwinnett County has an excellent parks and rec system, so you should be able to find many sports activities for the kids. Gwinnett County, GA: Parks & Recreation Also, this is the bible belt, so there are more churches than you can shake a stick at, including a number of mega-churches with lots of recreational activities.

There are many festivals and farmers markets throughout the metro area.
Dacula isn't far from North GA--lots of good day trips in the fall--apple picking, pumpkins and more. Yard sales are plentiful.

The Gwinnett County Library system is excellent--several branches have won national awards.

Atlanta has had some snow around the holidays --not often and not enough to remind you greatly of an Ohio Christmas but we have great trees. lol--There are several places where you can cut your own tree.

Gwinnett's park system is ranked #1 in the nation and the library system is also highly ranked. In Dacula, Hebron Baptist Church has enough church activities to satisfy that need and there are festivals and farmer's markets nearby in Lawrenceville, Duluth and Suwannee. It's one of the main reason why I love living in Gwinnett. Welcome!

Welcome to the area. As others have said Gwinnett has a great parks system. There is a very nice/ ver big park in Dacula right off Dacula Rd. across from the high school. Your kids might be a little young for the sports but here is a link to the Dacula Athletic Assoc: Dacula Athletic Association. The park also is on the same property as the Dacula library, which is brand new as of a couple years back. And there is a pool as well.

If you're in the Gwinnett side of Auburn, I imagine that would also be your best bet, but if you are in the city of Auburn- in Barrow County- here is some info on the parks there: Auburn, GA - Official Website - Parks and Leisure

We were just in Auburn this weekend for the fireworks and they have a nice playground/ park right in downtown off Hwy 8/29 (not sure exactly what its called there). I also believe they have a library right in that same area.

Also, Dacula is home to Hebron Baptist Church which is one of the biggest Southern Baptist churches in the country so there are plenty of opportunities to meet people and other kids through Hebron. They have their own sports teams I'm pretty sure. If you're looking for a smaller church, there are plenty of opportunities as well with just about every denomination.

If you have more specific questions, PM me and I'd be happy to help you.

Thank you all for the advice and kind words. I know here in Hilliard you can start out playing soccer at 4 and ice hockey at 3, even through all you really do is learn how to skate. That being said, I forgot to ask about what I read in a different post from someone else who relocated to GA. I see, and have been told, that there are many swim/tennis communities that are associated with certain subdivisions. Any feedback on this? Is it exclusively for those who own homes in that specific subdivision? Also, are there any nice public swimming pools? And lastly, since I love fishing, I have heard about Lake Lanier too many times to count. Any feedback on this either?

Again, all responses are appreciated.

Alot of your subdivisions will have swim/ tennis. That is almost pretty standard in most new subdivisions that are of a decent size. That would be something you would have to check to with your Realtor to see what subdivision has what, what the HOAs are, etc. Generally speaking I would imagine they are just for people who live in that subdivision. There is a public pool in Dacula pretty much on the same property as the park and library. I drive by it a good bit and its pretty busy- a better bet would probably be to look for a subdivision with a pool.

I've only fished on private property, but I imagine your best bets for fishing would be Lanier or the Chattahoochee river.
