I'm coming from Seoul. You can walk everywhere here... great transportation.

I know it's hard to make a comparison, but I'd like to be able to walk to the gym and for grocery shopping at least. Maybe for banking too...

Or any other southern city that I can easily get around?

I'd say Midtown and City of Decatur. There is a Publix right in midtown for groceries and plenty of restaurants, gyms, etc.

Midtown definitely. Atlantic Station, a development on the other side of the highway from Midtown, has everything you need in close proximity in a walkable environment. Plenty of apartments there. Not right next to the train station, but there is one nearby that can be reached by the free shuttle.

You might look at the Plaza Midtown condos in Midtown -- they have a Publix in the building and an excellent fitness center as well. Midtown is one of the more walkable areas and quite urban. Virginia-Highland is more neighborhood-y. Decatur is more like a small college town. It will depend on the vibe you're going for as to which would suit you best, but all would be considered very walkable.

As you're looking at locations, you can always check out Get Your Walk Score - A Walkability Score For Any Address to see what's in the vicinity.

Good luck and welcome to Atlanta!

More votes for Midtown and Decatur.
In Midtown, close to the Midtown MARTA station is great. Good transit access, lots of places to eat, a grocery store right there, and a quick walk to the park. It's also relatively safe.
