I hope these people are able to find new jobs....

Tennessee-based Sitel announced Monday that about 675 jobs will be eliminated from the Augusta call center this spring. The positions will be shed from the facility at 2115 Windsor Spring Road between March 9 and 31 at the end of an undisclosed client project, according to a corporate press release..

Reading the article, it seems Sitel presently employs approximately 1,000 associates, and will continue to maintain a presence after the workforce reduction. Two hundred associates were added last May as business picked up with two clients. As business has decreased or is becoming more efficient, 675 associates are being terminated.

That's an exaggeration. Not that huge, as it not like that was a major company that Augusta relied on or something. No, it's not good, but it would only be a huge blow to a much smaller area that had a hard time creating jobs. Obviously losing jobs is never good, its not going to have any major effect on Augusta...it's teleperformance. Those jobs aren't specifically secure anyways.

cnd33..

What if someone was to post...

Unisys is not that huge, as it's not like that is a major company that Augusta will rely on or something. Unisys would only be a huge impact to a much smaller area that had a hard time creating jobs. Obviously gaining jobs is good, but its not going to have any major effect on Augusta...it's just a call center. Those jobs aren't specifically secure anyways.

How would you reply?

Interesting, I would reply Unisys jobs are far higher paying than Sitel's...

Sitel has lost contracts in the past and usually end up replacing them in the future.

Pro and con....

The good side is as spotted out these are generally not the highest paying jobs. This is important, because it will have a little bit less of a ripple effect caused by a loss of consumer spending in other areas of the Augusta economy.

However... on the con. Be cautious not to be too dismissive. Augusta's msa labor force is about 165,000 employed positions. This equates to a loss of 0.4% of the total msa labor force or close to 1 out of 250 workers in the msa.

Now this kind of thing happens. Sometimes there are other companies looking for opportunities and will come in and a set up a similar operation. Call centers seem notoriously transient.
