A Ford Taurus hit the “Haunted Pillar” early Sunday morning.

It has become a tourist attraction with many people taking a picture with the pillar but never touching it, unless you were “brave.”

According to Augusta history, the pillar was part of The Lower Market” which was the center of agriculture and livestock trade during the middle 1800’s.

The structure was destroyed in 1878 and the local citizens moved the only column left standing to 5th and Broad Streets in downtown Augusta.

According to tradition, a wandering “exhorter” predicted that anyone who pulled down the pillar would be struck dead by lightning.

At least it will be rebuilt..

A three-inch stump is all that remains, the legend of the Haunted Pillar grew on Sunday with what Faurony calls the most bizarre thing he's ever witnessed. "I saw the wreck when it happened and the truck and the car collided but it's miraculous, it spinned up in the air and went around this post and hit the pole. That's what shocked me."

City Officials say since the pillar is in a public right of way, Augusta owns it. As for repairs, it's going take an engineer to come up with a rebuilding plan.

For ghost story experts like Rachelle Moran, it's been one of her calling cards as she operates South Coast Paranormal Society. "They want to see the pillar, I even have calls from people from New York, Massachusetts, asking me the history and asking me the legend."

A re-build would be great, but she says it just won't be the same. "I think it is, but to me it just wouldn't be the same. It wouldn't feel the same because it's not the original pillar."
