May be working in the downtown area, what are some good neighborhoods to live outside of that area, we have no kids but have dogs, like a night life but not a huge factor, would like a quieter area convientent to the lake and proximity to the Dwntwn.
Thanks

Price range, are you looking to lease or buy, if lease, are you looking for a house or an apartment or townhome or condo, what do you consider a reasonable commute (since you're asking about outside of the downtown area)?

It depends on what you consider "outside" of downtown. There are lovely neighborhoods right next to downtown that will give you a 15 to 30-minute commute time -- Clarksville, Tarrytown, Pemberton, SoCo, Travis Heights, Rosedale and Allandale. I live in Clarksville, which is about a 5 to 15 minute drive, depending on the time of day.

A resonable commute would be about 30 minutes maybe 45 LOL For the first year we would rent either condo, twn home or house .rice would be somewhere between $1,000- $2,000

Just trying to get a feel for the Austin area. If I take the job I will for sure go there first to check it out but just wanted to feel it our first
Thanks

to buy a home we would be willing to spend up to $350,000 but would prefere to rent for the first year. Also closer to the area of work would be more sutiable, which will be in the Dwntwn area, from what I've read driving can be a bear sometimes so a commute of less than 30 mintues would be best. I look forward to any information ya'll can offer.
Thanks

Okay, in your price range, you can be pretty close in. To balance that with a desire to be close to the lake, I'd recommend looking in the 78731 zip code, west of Mopac - there are condos for rent well within your price range, and 2222 (a road to the lake) runs through it.

For condos/apartments and townhouses, I'd look at 78731 (Northwest Hills area) and for apartments and houses I'd look at 78756 and 78757 (Crestview/Brentwood/Allandale/Rosedale areas.)

Just keep in mind that a 45 minute commute today will be over an hour in 5 years and 1:15 in 10 years. We're not improving transportation in the near future.

As an option OP could always move near a toll road or near the train that goes to downtown.

I want to thank everyone for the great info, it looks like the job will be in the 78732 zip code. Which is even better becasue we will have closer access to Lake Travis. Any info on neighborhoods within this zip code would be appreciated. Rent we would be willing to spend up to 1,500 To buy anywhere up to 325,000.
