Urban Living is not very expensive at all. It is on par or cheaper than West Elm with about the same quality.

Ashley's furniture, Rooms2Go and Texas Discount Furniture have been good decisions for my past purchases. I like TDF, you can bargain with the sales rep for the price. As for financing, Ashley's and Room2Go has some killer finance deals with zero interest payments for 20 years (not actually 20 years, but they have long extended finance deals though)

Good luck

World Market has some good deals & most of their stuff is wood, not MDF. Even Pottery Barn uses the fake stuff on some of their pieces. If you don't mind that, there's the outlet mall that has a Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, & Crate & Barrel outlet (I think).

We found some wonderful wood furniture at Furniture in the Raw.

I third the recommendation for Craigslist!

Try Room and Board Modern Furniture - Room & Board ... their prices are reasonable, quality is very good and they have trucks crossing the country regularly. Their stuff is cleanly designed and works well, but it's not overtly "modern."

For reasonably priced knockoffs of classic modern pieces, Design Within Reach is pretty good ... Design Within Reach: The Best in Modern Design ... this is how to get that $12000 bar stool at Roche Bobios for $400 ... LOL

I feel your pain, have been looking for quality modern style furniture. Regarding West Elm, Crate and Barrel (which I love)...after some research I think those store's items are expensive for what it is, wood is mostly veneer and alot of it is assemble yourself. Some of the pieces (dining room chairs, for example) are as expensive as high end brands!

In my opinion and after many years of experience....buy quality, even if more expensive...you'll have the piece forever.

And sorry, regarding Craigslist.....I would be afraid of bedbugs.

Not to sound snobby but I don't like the old dusty smell (allergic to dust) of used furniture/stuff thus I only want new furniture and mainly for living room (big seat section esp) and other living areas. Thanks everyone!

Skandinavia's furniture is primarily made in The USofA, Canada, Italy, Denmark and Norway. Not China or Vietnam, and it shows and it feels nicer!

I think most of you will actually find that the price jump from cheap to nice is not EXTREME.
