Hi,

I moved in to a new home 6 months back, and planning to get a water softner. we have a plumber came to give us an estimate for installing the loop, and he quoted $3300. we had the guys from home depot came to test the water and quoted $7000 to install a new water softner. I am looking to buy the $500 whirlpool softner from Lowes, and looking for a plumber to install it. I thought it would cost <$500, but looks like it's not. any body has any idea of how much would it cost? and any reccomendations for plumbers? Please help me with this.

All of those prices sound ridiculous to me. Adding the loop should be the most expensive part of this - depending on where you are putting it and how much work it is to get into the cold water line. If he has to trench to tap the main line, bust into walls, etc. the price will go up quickly.

How did the plumber explain his bid? Maybe it is realistic for your home - but it still seems crazy high.

Even if the loop costs that much, installing a softener is no more than half a days work.
