Am I right to assume that paver patios do not count as impervious cover?

No, I think that they do count! They may only count as a percentage but I'm pretty sure that they count for something in CoA.

If you use a sand grout, I'm pretty sure that they don't count. I just can't find anything to back it up.

call the city offices -- they'd be glad to share information and an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Okay, so I called, and it counts. I'm really surprised. What happens if we just ignore the city and do it anyway? I mean it's only 200 square feet.

Just because it is counted as impervious cover, doesn't mean you can't install it. You can add impervious cover if the total amount that will be on your site is less then the amount allowed by ordinance. You do have to get a permit to add it. The amount of impervious cover allowed depends on how your property is zoned. City of Austin - Zoning Frequently Asked Questions
City of Austin - Watershed Protection Dept: Watershed Ordinance Summary Table
City of Austin - Watershed Protection Dept: Watershed Ordinance Summary Map

Mine is a single family home on a lot zoned SF-2 which allows a maximum of 40% for the building and 45% total. This is probably correct for most single family homes unless you have a really large lot, over 10,000 SF, then it would be 35% & 40%. The total must include all decks, driveways, sidewalks, patios on your site.

If you build it without getting a permit, you could be fined and required to remove it.

No one in my neighborhood gets a permit and the contractor doesn't care. We're installing and not bothering with the city.

They will never find out about it. A neighbor installed a ton of porch pavers without asking anyone and he wasn't fined.

Yet! There's no statute of limitations or anything!

Which is why my standard line when looking at houses on the market always is "was that permitted?" And then I go home and look it up!

Tons of the stuff isn't permitted but that doesn't mean that it can't come back and cause problems later somewhere down the line for you or another owner.

but good luck!

Wow, everyone is so scared. Give me a break. People add patios, etc. all the time without contacting the city and it never comes back to bite them. You people worry too much. It's a small paver patio, big whoop!
