Today, I was driving home and I noticed a pick-up truck parked on my street. At a glance, I remember the sign on the truck door said something like "Health Consultants". As I'm pulling up to my house, I see this guy walking down the street, pointing what looked to be some kind of radar-gun-looking-device at each house from the curb.

What the heck was he doing?

I saw him today too! He was aiming a radar type gun at each house. I don't know if it was like the one pictured above.

How about next time someone ask them what they're doing. Then you can report back to us. Be sure to wear your tin-foil hat though, you just never know.

I've seen the meter readers in my neck of the woods carrying those, so maybe that's it.

Meter readers that use the hand held units have to walk up to your meter. They read it manually but enter it in the unit to be downloaded later. For the remote reads, the truck drives by with an antenna-based receiver that captures a radio signal from all AMR meters within a 1-mile radius. There's no need to stop at each house unless the battery on the actual meter is dead and a manual read is required.

He could've been collecting address data also. Many companies, especially utilities, need to know where their customers are. They'll go out with GPS equipment with a laser finder and shoot a GPS location of the front door of the building.
