Going on a biz trip to Texas A&M next couple of days. Flying into Austin, and renting a car. Can anyone tell me the best driving route leaving central Austin (visiting some friends there first) around 3:30pm? Also...any good places to grab an iced coffee along the way?

Thanks in advance

There are a few roads traveling east that will take you there.

From central Austin, I'd probably go 290 East to 21 East.

If you start farther north, I'd go 79 East to 36 South to 21 East.
(Or you can go 79 East, stay on 79 past the 36 south, and then 6 South into College Station.)

There are more roadside places, gas stations, etc. along 290 than 79. I don't know of a particular place for iced coffee, but hopefully you'd find one, probably not too far out of Austin.

The mileage difference between the 2 routes I mentioned is only about 2 miles. It's really about a wash, depending on traffic and where you are starting from. 290 could be a little busy leaving town, but if you leave right at 3:30, you should be OK.

Thanks much! I did in fact take 290 East to 21 East, and got here with no issues other than being stopped for speeding along the way :-( I guess I got a bit carried away with the 70 mph speed limits which you don't find in the Northeast.

Not much along the way, but did stop at McDonald's in Caldwell for iced coffee.

While in College Station ... you really should get over to the Dixie Chicken ... just ask anyone for directions.

D'oh on the speeding. I always always slow down going through those little towns. Burton is the worst offender.

The trooper was very polite and let me off with a warning!

Regarding eats...thanks for the suggestion but I'm a vegetarian. I did go to the Blue Baker which I thought had great food for a self-serve place.

No, no, no! ... it's not a chicken place, it's a beer joint Beer, great atmosphere (very subjective I know) and rat trap cheese ... assuming vegetarian and not vegan ... sorry for the confusion ... I should have been more clear. I don't know the Blue Baker, but then I did leave school there about 30 years ago ... good Lord

Anyway, hope you had a good visit/trip.
