We are considering moving to Austin but I am wondering what areas to focus on for great public schools (have 2 children who are currently receiving special education services for learning challenges) and a home with a chunk of property. We don't want to be sandwiched in between houses. Does this exist in Austin or in surrounding areas? We'd like to keep our house cost under $600K. We are currently living in the Boston, MA area.

You can get what you want in Spicewood or nearby. Communities such as Travis Settlement have acreage, 1-7 acres, and excellent Lake Travis ISD schools.

go to trulia and enter your search there. There are a lot, but you need to give more info about size of house and what part of town you will be commuting to. There is a really nice one in river point on far view dr.

Lake Travis Isd or Dripping Springs Isd. Both have really good schools and have many areas with acreage.

You also might want to consider Leander ISD - though my children are grown and gone and so I have no personal experience, I've heard good things from clients about their special education services.

If you're looking for acreage, I would say Dripping Springs would be the best bet. DSISD is a great school district, it's not overcrowded, and I've heard many good things.

I third Dripping Springs! Excellent schools, plenty of open space, and not as crowded as the Lake Travis area. I'd love to move out there, but my husband doesn't want to make the commute to downtown Austin. (The Y gets extremely backed up, so keep that in mind if you will be commuting to Austin during rush hour).
