Off hours, OK, but standard commute times, no.

Thank you all for all the great advice.

Hopefully these apartments will be available when we get there. We are planning to be in Austin on Memorial Day weekend to look around and also drive around the city to get a feel of the different neighborhoods. Does anyone know if the apartment complexes' business office will be open that weekend? I will have to fly back on Monday but my DH is staying to find us a place and get ready for his new job.

MY DH shift will be 6:30 AM to 3:00 so I guess his commute will not be bad from South Lamar if we choose to live there. He is an early bird and likes to be at work 1 hour before. I'm not sure what I am doing yet but hoping to teach in the Austin school district.

LeMed is about 750 for a one bedroom which is not at all bad. It's one of my top choices for location but that still has to be seen and checked out. I really want to see what walkable means in Austin. I know I can't compare it to New York City which is very walkable but i would like to be in close proximity to a grocery store where I can just walk if I forget an ingredient for a recipe.

Mueller has some nice brand new apartments which is kinda nice and has washer and dryers!!! Coming from NYC, washer and dryer in the apartment is like heaven to me

As an afterthought, would it help us immensely if we enlist the help of an apartment locator? I was reading the pros and cons of getting one on this board so I am kind of reluctant about it.

Yes, it will help you immensely unless you end up with a dunce, which is highly likely if you're not careful. I don't lease apartments but I list a lot of houses for lease, and the locator/leasing agents I've been dealing with lately are dumber than the dumbest people you've ever known. It's horrible.

You have to interview carefully and ask a lot of questions and get one who knows the market and the areas you're searching. They are out there, some really good ones, but you have to sift through a few first. I'll PM you a recommendation.

Steve

Thanks, Steve.

I did not know how to open the PM and it disappeared. Sorry.

Am I hallucinating or did I hear in the last month or two about some big apartment/condo project which is going to be built at Lamar & Manchaca? I vaguely recall a Kelso story in the Statesman about some auto body shop which was having to shut down to make way for it.

There is a little pocket neighborhood on Manchaca South of Lamar. We looked there last November and they had sold several already but still had more to go. Pretty decent prices chiefly because there wasn't really a neighborhood - just a little development right off a busy road and not really walkable to much of anything, though still a lot closer to town than what that money would get you elsewhere.

If that's the pocket I'm thinking of, I lived there shortly after relocating to Austin. It was quiet and had good access to Ben White, but driving up S. Lamar was a pain - and based on my last visit to Austin in December, all the new developments along S. Lamar appear to have made that traffic worse.

Do not live south of the Colorado River (or as some Austinites call it, Town Lake). Every colleague I have who lives south of the river complains and is often sending plaintive emails from their blackberries apologizing for missing an early meeting because they are stuck in traffic. And they don't live as far south as you cited.

Rosedale is nice, but I would guess any apartment in your price range is a dump.

Mueller is good bang for your buck and close to some trendy stuff on the east side.
