i'm thinking of moving to austin, i'm 22, graduating a small private college this year. i might try to continue on studying in austin, or just work. in either case, i dont have a license or a car. and with what it costs to own, operate and pay gas for a car these days, i'm not sure i want to. would public transportation be able to get me around efficiently? ( here where i live, it takes 45 minutes for a bus to go a distance that a car can cover in 20 minutes , which is a long time, but manageable i guess. i'm just sayign i woudlnt want it any worse. )

We have an extensive bus system here that is more efficient the closer you live to downtown. It does reach out to many of the farther extents of the city, but at that point you're going to be half an hour between buses and the trips will be twice as long as by car. It really just depends where you're going to live and where you're going to need to travel each day.

I'd say Austin is not a good place to depend purely on public transit. If you are a student and can live near campus or a shuttle bus stop than it's probably alright to not have a car but if you're working than I wouldn't suggest it. The city is very spread out and most of the bus routes don't run that often. Also lots of transfers are involved to get many places. I say this from experience of riding the bus in Austin. I think sometimes people like to say the bus system in Austin is good but they don't ride it.
