Will start in 2012 on a new purpose-built track near the airport. They will race until 2021 on a facility built with private funds though the large event fund will be tapped at 25M/year for other improvements. Austin was chosen for many reasons including being a part of a large economic and population area; proximity to Mexico and S. America; a supporting governer, comptroller, and city mayor; and a hosting city more inclined to F1 than to NASCAR. This will be the largest a annual sporting event in Tx with 200k in the stands and 600M watching on TV. It will change the nature of Austin and provide jobs throughout East Texas.

That's interesting. Wonder if you got this information from Austin American-Statesman?

EDIT: I had to go to the Austin discussion thread and found the thread on F1 in Austin which is about 11 pages now.

That sounds great! Love F1. I don't consider Austin to be in East Texas, but it doesn't matter.

It's closer than majority of the other cities in the USA, and along with that it's one of the few cities that has enjoyed a good economic growth.

It was mostly chosen because a family friend of the head of Formula 1 happened to live in Austin and made it his sole personal effort to promote Austin as a great place for a race.
It basically fell in Austin's lap.

Being originally from East Texas, I was wondering about that, myself. How is it that F1 coming to Austin, which is in Central Texas, will provide a lot of jobs in East Texas?
