He often does graveyard shifts and so we may be some of those "40 somethings just walking around in casual clothes with nowhere to be".

I also work from home part time (at a regular salary) for a tech company in Silicon Valley (found the job while I was in Austin though - applied online & did a phone interview ).

I'm working right now(well, actually I'm lurking around on this forum), working for an online testing service. Not getting full-time pay but it still gives me the ability to appear like I'm slacking, while getting paid I'm a believer in 2-3 part-time jobs...more variety!

Sounds to me like there's some resentment out there from people who work traditional jobs My dad was an auto worker and was an old man in his forties. He taught me early on that if you can avoid that sort of thing and do something you like, you'll be much happier than most people.

I assume the 7 blocks you're talking about is 6th street. There is so much more to Austin than a few bars. Have you ever been to free concert at Zilker, climbed Mt Bonnell during a lunar eclipse, been to the Fine Arts Festival, a concert in Waterloo park, canoed on Town Lake, camped at Emma Long (City) Park? Just to name a few! Wow, if your only view of Austin's entertainment is 6th street, then you are missing a lot!

Sounds like too much Chamber of commerce tour guide reading...

Try SoCo(get out and walk), and it's First Thursdays. S 1st has a bunch of cool little boutiques as well...There's a ton of hiking OUTSIDE of the Lady Bird Lake trail...

I think there's a bunch of stuff to do and I ain't no hayseed

CoC, haha! Actually, those are all things I've done that I thought were fun (the lunar eclipse on Mt Bonnell was a hoot!). I've heard about First Thursdays but haven't made it over there yet. I'm thinking about starting a thread about fun things to do in Austin, for all the newbies as well as us oldtimers who either just need reminding or want to find some new adventures. Sorry for the threadjack, back to the OT!

I wasn't referring to your ideas!!!!! I meant the folks who were limiting Austin to a 7-block strip of bars.....sorry!

Good idea. Definitely doable in today's world. Doesn't sound very stable, however.

Twange is right about First Thursday. That is Austin. It grew organically on its own without corporate or official involvement of anyone. Some of the businesses used to have free kegs of beer to serve yourself from until the City tried to commandeer it and the police cracked down on the free alcohol.
