This would be absolutely awesome and it would definitely be a very Austin-type thing to do.

Yeah, they could take those decommissioned 'Dillo' cars out of storage and hang them up!

That's not really an Austin type idea... Aw, it's not for you. It's more of a Shelbyville idea.

Monorail!

A network of Gondolas in Austin? I think it would be an eyesore. There are no mountains to ascend here.

Gondolas are slow, have low passenger capacity, and are best suited for areas with steep slopes.

I fail to see how this makes any sense for Austin.

This is a solution looking for a problem. With its low capacity, a gondola system wouldn't really provide very much utility for moving people around downtown. If we're going to spend money, better to do it on high capacity transit solutions like Urban Rail that can actually have a transformational effect on downtown mobility.

It does look kind of cool, though.

I saw a claim on the Austinist web site today (from a commenter) that the capacity of the gondola system is 10,000 passengers per hour. The commenter went on to state that 4-6 people is the expected vehicle capacity of an individual gondola.

Do the math. To move 10,000 passengers an hour with 6-passenger gondolas would require a frequency of 1,666 gondolas per hour...which works out to a gondola every 2 seconds.

This is silly. "Weird", I'll grant you. But silly.

It would be kind of cool ti use when new but I couldn't see it taking off. I think a better idea if were dreaming is a monorail.
