I have been told there's a huge Czech community still in Texas, but haven't been to Texas since 1996. I'm looking at heading to UT-Austin when I get back from Brno in late 08-early 09. Is there still a Czech community in that area? (I'd be doing a grad degree in Slavic studies focussing on Czech, if all goes well).

Also, I'm looking for housing; preferably a house/condo/townhouse that is super pet friendly (I hope to get into dog rescue and fostering), I've heard the Austin area is good for that as well. Is that the case?

My roommate in college was an Ondrusek, which apparently is slavic, seeing as he got mail addressed to "Slavic Surnamed Student" from the slavic students assoc. . He was from the Shiner area (SSE of Austin). Flatonia, Moulton, Shiner, and several other small towns in that area are predominantly Czech. Shiner beer had a slogan..."Our beer goes through 100s of quality Czechs daily" .

There are lots of Czechs all around and in Austin. I live in Hutto and there are lots here, and in Taylor, Coupland, Elgin, Bastrop and Granger. My BIL is Czech and his grandmother is from Europe and still has the accent. Their family is all over the area.

Wonderful! How far are those places from Austin? I know htat if I get into the gradschool I'd like to be near there for awhile, but I have no concept of how far they are.
