I just noticed that the City of Austin has posted the annual crime statistics for
2012 and was curious to see how they compared to 2011 below.

The totals are not as good as last year where most total numbers decreased.
Comparing 2011 and 2012:
Murder increased from 27 to 34
Rape decreased from 225 to 219
robbery decreased from 1144 to 1040
Agg Assault increased from 1922 to 1980
Burglaries increased from 7018 to 7199
Thefts increased from 33442 to 34374
Motor V-Theft increased from 2256 to 2448

It is not unreasonable to expect total numbers to rise with the population. But the crime rates tell a more meaningful picture and most Austin crime stats continue to improve over time.

I agree, it was unusual to see the total numbers decrease in 2011 in spite of the growth of the City.

I know there is a little legal wrangling involved; but it seems pretty late in the game to be releasing numbers from 14+ months ago.
