What is different about other countries where they do not have such a problem with drunk drivers? What is their solution?
Capital punishment. Literally.

Germany has hefty fines (as a % of your income), long term license suspension, and invasive psychological testing to get your license back.

Can't vouch for this, but like the Costa Rica one:
Malaysia:

The Driver is jailed and if married, his wife is jailed too.

Australia:

The names of the drivers are sent to the local newspapers and are printed under the heading “He’s Drunk and in Jail.”

South Africa:

A 10 year prison sentence and the equivalent of a $10,000 fine.

Turkey:

Drunk drivers are taken 20 miles outside of town by police and are forced to walk back under escort.

Finland & Sweden:

Automatic jail for one year of hard labor.

Costa Rica:

Police remove plates from car.

Russia:

Not many may be surprised that they have tough laws based on Russians long love affair with alcohol. If caught driving under the influence of alcohol, you lose your driving license for life. Even upon the first offense.

Mexico and Canada:

Give their border patrol agents the right to deny a person entry into the country if he has been convicted of DUI.

Here you can drive drunk AND run people over and simply claim the "it was dark, I thought it was an animal, I was scared" defense.

I'm looking at you, Gabrielle Nestande.

You're acting like she got off scot free. She didn't. She got a felony conviction, six months in jail, and ten years probation. So obviously her "defense" didn't work.

She ran over someone and left the scene...I'd say she got off pretty close to free, scot or otherwise.

We already have Night Owl buses to take people home. Why would we turn cops into bus drivers?
#1. Gustapo tactics include but not limited to:

Checkpoints, drones, unwarranted search and seizures during stops, entrapment with the drinking crowd.

#2. We the taxpayer pay their salaries and they can do a better job of "Serving" the public.

that's why.

* I had my car's back seat ripped out during a stop because the 2 cops thought I had drugs in the car because the one "claimed" he smelled marijuana. and I don't even smoke cigarettes let alone marijuana.

And APD does none of those. DUI checkpoints are illegal in Texas. State Sobriety Checkpoint Laws

Might as well be knowing that 6th street is a Drinker's Heaven and the 7th street lock up is right around the corner.

Fact is, APD could do a BETTER job of "Serving" the public. they are just hangin out waiting on IH35 and all the various outlet streets to Mopac, etc...so they can catch drunks. they KNOW the people will drink and get drunk, it's a given. acting like people should have all their faculties after a night of boozin' under the downtown lights is just naive on APD's part.

I put the oweness squarely on them to DO BETTER, and cut down on the rampant lock ups for drinkers.

It's a total buzzkill. and Acevedo is a shill. and He's from L.A.?

That's why I call it entrapment. because they KNOW the end results but their only solutions is jail and fines on the back end but NOTHING to help the situation on the front end.
