Hi - I just made my maiden visit to Austin and had a different impression of green belt in my mind when I went from Chicago.

Lots of trees did not have any leaves on them and looked more like trees in Winter in Chicago. Is that because of how it is in winter or something else ? I did see few trees with green leaves but somehow was expecting a little more greener when everyone was saying green belt.

Also there seems to be a great effort by the city to keep the existing trees intact which I think is very commendable.

Yes, Austin has winter too. Most of the trees here are deciduous and lose their leaves in the fall/winter. there are exceptions of course. You'll start to see the new growth here in about a month.

Our deciduous trees drop their leaves later and leaf out earlier than they do up north, but they are still definitely bare in the dead of winter. About the only exception is our wonderful (unless you have to rake) live oaks, which drop and regrow their leaves almost simultaneously in the Spring.

(Hah, I am so old I thought this was a post about an old Fleetwood Mac album. When I first saw the title I heard the first few chords of the title song in my mind.)

Cedar Elms are particularly craggy when they have no leaves. Thankfully, the various Oaks lose their leaves 'round the clock' and most wooded areas are never completely bare.

You should have dropped by starting in summer '08 and for the next five years. It looked like the whole region had started to pull for UT...everything was 'burnt orange'

Been a lot greener the past two years

Everyone else pretty much covered it. But I want to add that the greenbelt here are never really THAT green. Thanks to a lack of rain and the ridiculous heat in the summer, a lot of things dry out. I guess the trees are still green, but if you are expecting lush, green fields, we don't really have those here most of the time.

The cedar (ash juniper) trees are green year round, but you pay for it in the winter with the pollen.

The green down here is different from up north, everything is kind of just dull. The tree and grass outside of my window has looked the same all year round

This too.
If one goes more east or southeast in Texas, it gets more green/lush.
Go west, and it's the desert-like landscape often associated with Texas.
