hello
just moved to Austin. I am looking for an area to live that has the least air pollution as I have COPD.
I can not be buy any high traffic roads, airplane fly zones or any industrial pollution. So in the city or outside of it...what would be the best area?

I'm sure the others will offer up some good suggestions but I sincerely hope you are aware of the serious allergen issues here and prepared given your COPD. Pollens and mold counts are incredibly high here in central TX -- year round -- in contrast to the majority of the country. I would not wish that combo on anyone. Best of luck.

Nearly all of the city is in relatively close proximity to major highways, I would look at the Hill Country around Austin. As mentioned, allergies are vicious here and year around. Cedar runs from Nov to Feb and it can burden those without a specific cedar allergy just due to the particulate load in the area -- this is true of the whole region, including the Hill Country. Maybe east of Austin would work? Giddings?

I haven't noticed the allergens yet. About what % of people are effected?

almost every native! It can take transplants 3-5 years to develop allergies although anyone can be bothered by the particulate load during cedar season (November to February). Search the threads here, LOTS of them on allergies.

Get a good filtration unit for your home.

My allergies and my wife's have been worse down here than up in NY.

When it is dry, stuff blows around that kills us.

We are both on allergy shots after we got Cedar Fever two years in a row. They seem to work well.

Now I need a nasal steroid also.

I have also had throat infections two years in a row here. Never had anything at all in NY.
