I won't bother posting the Statesman article because it's paywalled.

My question is this:

Whatever happened to the groovy vintage neon Twin Oaks sign and why did they replace it? It was quietly replaced with the crappy one sometime in the 1990s, I think.

Great snag by HEB!!. Kinda sad to see the old HEB caddy-corner get demo'ed (we all know what's coming). I drive by that intersection all the time and wonder why such a great location has sat untouched for decades like that - it's walking distance from South Congress, but has section 8 stores.

In the '50s Twin Oaks was considered to be the latest thing in modern shopping centers. There is a story or video about its grand opening online somewhere.
When in high school in 1959, I remember going with my parents to Clyde Hill's TV & Appliance store to buy a fridge and washer & dryer for their new South Austin home. My parents patronized the store for many years.

Hopefully they keep all the fine greenery!

I always thought the "Twin Oaks" felt was ironic, since they paved almost every square inch EXCEPT around the base of those 2 oaks. But I guess those were the days when landscaping meant a few concrete planters. I'm sure anything new that's built there will probably have to add pervious cover. So at least the oaks won't be lonely anymore.

I have no idea of where Twin Oaks is...although I may have been there many times. Same for the plethora of strip centers up and down 183 above the MoPac interchange. I might know an anchor store and might frequent more than one location within a shopping center; but I'll bet I couldn't name 20% of the shopping centers. Same for networks on TV. I watch, record, watch later; but couldn't tell you what network is which(other than HGTV and Cooking type specialty networks).

It's nowhere near me; but I had no idea of the history of Violet Crown Shopping Center before the TexasGunTalk group wanted to go to Stiles Switch for one of our Friday lunches.(We are headed there NEXT Friday, BTW). To me, it might as well be the "Stiles Switch Shopping Center"...I couldn't name another business in there. I couldn't possibly keep track of all the strip centers up and down Burnet and Lamar...it's one big hodgepodge to me.

I shall look up Twin Oaks for my own edification, forthwith.

ETA: South Congress at Oltorf???? No wonder this suburbanite has never heard of it! If the Mellow Johnny's Scout A Route bike ride doesn't go by there, I'm not likely to ever see it! Carry on, y'all!
