This is an interesting development, I know so many people who work there at the corporate level. Mackey must be furious, he has been a tear lately railing against the interests who have bought 10% of the company about a year ago and who want a big payday, looks like they will get it.

Sad for Austin though.

The company that gobbled up local competitors all over the country and served as poster child for hippies become poseurs, rendering them ridiculous, just got gobbled up. Woe is me.

I'm betwixt and between. Does this mean that I can order rounds of Marin French Cheese Brie and fresh artisan bread along with a 40 lb sack of dog food and a 12-pack of Bic pens and have them delivered the same day? 'Cause it would be hard to see fault in that. On the other hand, Amazon seems to be on a path toward world domination, which supersedes my lazy desire to never have to leave the house to shop again.

Yes, I get that. I'm not a Whole Foods shopper, 1-2x a year at best usually for a specific item and always the original store on Lamar and the flagships that followed. To me they are part of an old Austin that is rapidly disappearing, they were the place that you dropped in to get something for the potluck. Was always surprised to see them spread outside of Austin.

I think it's a good thing. Maybe Amazon will make Whole Foods more competitive. Whole Foods dug their own grave with their prices. That may have worked for a while; but now that there are more stores offering the same products for less money, they can't compete. They never adjusted to the increased competition. Sprouts, Trader Joes, even local groceries, and yes, the internet provide convenient outlets for people to buy the same thing for less money.

I'm not into the organic thing anyway but there's so many organic offerings elsewhere that there's no need to shop at Whole Paycheck.

My son just sent me a short video of a packed room Q&A at corporate office right now. Seems they didn't know about this either!

I used to shop at the Burnet & 183 location years ago a lot. Used to love WFs when they were just local and small. I rarely go anymore outside of getting few favorites we like or something special. Long gone are the days when I did regular shopping there.

I've visited the flagship store several times and it was just ugh ... overwhelming. So I never went any longer.

Then they opened a small location in Bee Cave near my house and it's great. Small, never very crowded, and smaller selection cuts down on my analysis paralysis. But on a bad note, the only crime I've ever had committed against me in Texas was in that store. I sat my cell phone on the floral counter for less than one minute while waiting for the clerk to wrap my bouquet. Turned my head to look at something and poof - my brand new Iphone 6 was gone. My fault for leaving it on the counter of course, but some turd stole it and that's on them.
