Hello, I may be taking a trip to downtown Austin one weekend and I wanted to know if there was an optimal time to leave Dallas on a Friday (no earlier than 2:30pm) to try and beat the Austin rush-hour traffic and/or if there were any route tips I should keep in mind to try and avoid traffic. Thanks.

2:30 departure is going to put you about 5:15-30 downtown.

4:00+ will have you tied up in Dallas.

I like to split that window.

Depending on where in DFW you're coming from, yes.

So true! I used to the reverse drive, Austin to Dallas on Fridays and I had good luck leaving at 4:30 or so (I was starting just north of downtown which helped), had heavy traffic through Georgetown but then it opened up and Dallas would be clear by the time I arrived.

Much depends on where exactly in DFW you start from! Are you leaving from McKinney or south of downtown Dallas?, starting on I35W or I35E?

If you can arrive in Austin after 7 pm much of the traffic has dissapated.

As long as you get south of the mixmaster by 3:30-4, you’ll be fine.
