Hello everyone,

I'm moving to Austin in August (frome Seattle) and am trying to get a handle on prospective employers. I currently work for a local spec home builder, but would like to explore life on the side of rehabing old spaces and preserving our history rather than tearing buildings down and putting up a new one with a short life expectancy.

Has anyone heard of any commercial or residential builders that specialize in this?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

I do not know of any. But if you are looking for a more considerate trac builder, I would look at greenbuildersinc.com

You could also contact the Austin AIA. I know at the Gala this year, the entire focus was on green building and redevelopment. They should be able to point you in the right direction.

Used to be an architectual company called "Group 2" (I think) that did historical preservation work. They were architects, but I bet they would know some builders/contractors.

Contact the Architecture Division of the Texas Historical Commission.

They would know all of the preservation architects working in the Austin area, if not the whole state.

The head of the program is Stan Graves, and the head of architectural review is Bradford Patterson. You could speak to either of them, but I believe that anyone who answers the phone would be able to provide an unranked list of architects in the preservation field.

Architecture Division

The Texas Historical Commission’s (THC) Architecture Division works to preserve and protect Texas’ diverse architectural heritage. Staff members provide design and rehabilitation advice to assist with preserving properties that span the state’s rich history, from majestic historic county courthouses and commercial buildings to Spanish missions and simple log cabins.
