I'm considering a relocation to Austin and wanted some input re: which neighborhoods close to the city might be affordable and safe. I'd be renting to start with and maybe forever. Looking at small apartments in the $600-700 range. Any suggestions for good neighborhoods with lots of shops, cafes, bookstores, etc?

Am a single woman in mid-50's who likes a lot of activity and "urban" environments. Can live modestly in a small place. Important to be close to city or in a nice neighborhood, with low crime. Living somewhat near UT would be fine, in an area not **totally** saturated with students. Would love to be able to walk to shops. Rent range is $600-700 plus utilities.

That could be tough...there is a proportinal relationship between the rent and the proximity to the city center. The lower rent areas near campus (Hyde Park and others) tend to be the older aparments or run-down homes and contain more students (could be called overrun ).

Anyway, I don't know of anything in that price range off-hand, some of the more 'central' Austinites may have some more info...

The "plus utilities" part makes it difficult. Years ago, a friend of mine rented an efficiency in Hyde Park for $450/month, utilities not included. I'm not sure what the place goes for today.

As stated in another post, the closer you get to the city center with amenities within walking, the higher the rents. Austin may be cheap to lots of out-of-state folks, but the streets aren't paved in gold!

xz2y, I see several off of S 1st for under 700.that are condos and they are 1/1. One on southport, a duplex

That is walking distance to the So congress hip and fun area. It is also a stones throw to downtown.

Hope that helps!
