Have you considered Georgetown? It has Lake Georgetown plus the San Gabriel River, the Goodwater Trail, parks, the community center is currently being renovated and enlarged plus there's activities at Southwestern University and elsewhere, there are lots of houses on half an acre or more. Easy access to good shopping both in town and down the highway.

I am a little leary of Georgetown. My mom lives there, at the Estrella Retirement Home. I am concerned, though, that it is too conservative a place for us. And yes, I know that people are pretty live-and-let-live, but I am concerned that a couple of old hippy-liberal-California refugee-environmentalists will not fit in well in Georgetown. My sister, who has a similar lifestyle to us (but has always been a Texan), lives in Apache Shores. That's why we were looking on that side of town.

Well, I'm an old hippy-liberal-ecobroker and I fit in well there. (Don't live there, but close enough that it's where my office is and I shop there and I hang out there.)

My daughter lived in Apache Shores until very recently. That's another good possibility.

We will actually be in Austin tomorrow, and I'm sure will go to Georgetown when taking my mom around. I will get a map and check it out a little more. It would be nice to have the university there for us. One thing that makes me wary is that, according to my mom, the churches are pretty conservative, and that reflects the community. Also, its in Williamson County, which really has a reputation. No matter where we pick, however, we are not sure that this is a good time to move; our home in CA has lost a lot of value, and we don't know what is happening to Austin home prices. With the economy the way it is, its a scary time to make any big moves.

Is there a part of town where Filipinos live? If not, are there other Asian neighborhoods such as a Chinatown?

There are quite a few Asian stores and restaurants in a couple of areas. Far North Lamar is one. 183 a bit east of Burnet is another. (Cannot remember the name of the cross street right now. More caffeine!) There's another on North Lamar a bit south of Airport, I believe (I can see it in my head, but I can't picture exactly where it is. Like I said, more caffeine!)

Because of the tech industry there are parts of town with significant Asian populations. Any neighborhood that feeds into Westwood HS would likely be 10-25% Asian. (Basically 2-3 miles on either side of US 183....between Mopac & 620).

Our neighborhood elementary school is about 20% Asian (for example).

When my dad was looking at houses in Lakeway a while ago, he said that their taxes were incredibly high.

Really? That's a surprise to me, and I'm there every day. Perhaps a different part of Georgetown than you're in on a daily basis?
