I get quite a few magazines like Audubon and I was wondering if there is a way to recycle these to a classroom or nursing home, or some place where they would get some more use before going into the paper recycling bin. Any suggestions? I've tried listing them for free on craigslist and all I get a are bunch of spamming replies and people who say they want them and never show. I'd love to hear everyone's ideas. TIA.

Take them to public libraries. The Ralph Yarborough library on Hancock Drive in Austin has a bookshelf just inside and to the left of the front door where people bring magazines for others to pick up as needed. I always check that for my students' projects. I imagine others who work in education do the same.

Offer them to your nearest Elementary school. The young students always have ongoing projects that include cutting and pasting.

Half price books will take anything printed at their buy desk. If they can re-use it by selling it at the store, they will, otherwise they recycle it.

Hospitals are always happy to take them as well.

Child care facilities would use them as well for projects and such.

Personally, I would consider first the places where you think people would actually read the articles (if you believe in the Audubon mission.) When the magazines start to get worn, then it would seem appropriate to send them someplace where kids are cutting out the pictures.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure who that would be! We have a brand new library in our neighborhood and I am going to see if they want them. If not, I'll try the elementary school next.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions.

I think the volunteer groups at the hospitals would really like to have them - I spent months in an ICU waiting room two years ago, and the constant cycle of new magazines brought in by the volunteer groups was so wonderful. I even started taking some of my own magazines to them!
