I was looking at a map and noticed many of these TX city names seem familiar.. where have I heard of that city and this other city before... Ohh right, on CNN! "Federal officials are storming the compound at Somewheres, TX"... anyone here want to name the strange cults in TX cities? And any reason there's been so many in TX (or is it just the size of the state) ?

ahh, I can remember all those media clips of janet reno now...

and about these places, do they have funky-cult-historical-landmarks ?

My theory is that a lot of these cult leaders perceive Texas as a place where your business won't be meddled in by the government. It turns out that this is the case only if you are on the same political page as the majority of Texans.

Are there actually a lot?
I can only think of the Branch Davidians and the current FLDS compound near Eldorado. That's 2.

of course my mentioning of any name of any oddball group in no way means that the respective oddballs in the oddball groups are at all oddballs.

Exhibit A) The House of Yahweh ABILENE, TEXAS

Exhibit B) "GARLAND, Texas (CNN) -- A Taiwanese cult leader who claims he fathered Jesus 2,000 years ago and now talks to God through a ring on his finger has brought his followers into this Dallas suburb to await God's appearance in a flying saucer. "

Exhibit C) Branch Davidians

Exhibit D) the Zendiks

Exhibit E) Gilmer TX

Exhibit F) G W Bush

Exhibit G) Keep austin weird

ok the last couple are stretching it..
