Alright, as long as we're on the same page with Austin not being like San Francisco and Berkeley. I actually believe that it would be a negative statement anyway. I've lived about 45 minutes to an hour away from San Francisco and Berkeley and in that two years came to the realization that I would never want to live in either place.

I am pretty sure that Austin is NOT the only city that has a Gay Pride Parade. Houston does, I am sure and I think Dallas does too!

Corpus Christi maybe not.

In Austin you can be a liberal and still eat meat, go to church, and own guns. (And yes, there are precincts in Travis Heights and Bouldin that will vote 97% dems (or in 2000 go for Nader) or vote 97% against DOM acts).

the liberal/conservative thing is really not as big of a deal as people make it. I've lived in both Boston (very liberal) and Fairbanks, Alaska (very conservative) and I've met a fair share of both conservatives and liberals in both places. And yes, I even know gay people here in Fairbanks. The point is, anywhere (unless it is an isolated, small town, but anywhere with a population base), you will probably find a range of people with which you have something in common.

Houston DOES have a gay pride parade. Also a gay and lesbian film festival.

I would say that Austin is more libertarian than liberal. For example, gun ownership/use is accepted and respected in Austin...and that is definitely NOT a liberal ideal.

I once read a description of the temperament of Great Pyrenees dogs that fit them admirably and, upon reflection, also fits Austin pretty well. It said, "They mind their own business, and prefer that others do likewise." Which is to say, as long as you aren't trying to force others to think or act the way you do, you're perfectly welcome to live your life as it suits you. Now, we do have something of a reputation for protesting, but that's government and something else again, as that IS our business. And we've had more than a few people move into the area that come from a culture (be it liberal or conservative, but, to be perfectly honest, mostly it's the liberals that do this) where minding everyone else's business and trying to make them think and act the way you do is the thing to do, but they're mostly, at the moment, just a minor annoyance.

Sorry I'm so late to the shindig...

Anyway, to the OP: I know you are looking for a job in the gaming industry, but there is a fairly new Art Institute of Austin - which is affiliated with the one in Portland (I teach music and audio production here) - and there might be teaching opportunities etc...in the media department. You might want to investigate that as a plan B OR just look into doing it part-time.

I was told by some s.congress locals that it wouldn't be surprising to find naked people wandering round SXSW in soco area.. seemed plausible.

Hopefully at some point the people of Austin wake up about the begger problem here. some young mexican kid walked up to me at the gas station last night (~10pm?) asking "got a quarter for the bus?" NO. (BTW, I don't think that would happen in LA, because the kid would get shot. And are buses really 1 quarter? Thought not.) Today around U.T., some dirty dredded druggie-looking type hit up some guy near me with "spare a dollar for psychedelic research?" NO. At some point I'd guess that the people here would realize it's not good to "feed the pigeons". I wasn't hit up by beggers this much in SF, and wow, they really love their homeless & beggers there. (Of course the SF gov't caused it's own addictive drug problem too, so they made a lot of their own homeless.)

In my previous CA city, there are good numbers of homeless "regulars" (i.e. see the same ppl all the time) and they are allowed to hold signs, however the instant they verbally beg or physically approach people, they are run out of town. beggars make a fair "wage" there (over $200-500 per month depending on location and tourism season) by sitting/standing in their spots (or even playing the same wrong chord on a guitar over & over).

Austin could at least aspire to a "no verbal begging and no walking up to people" rule.
