Hi All,

I was wondering if I could get some help from you "seasoned Veterans"? We are considering moving to the Austin area and have questions about areas of town and property taxes.

Being that most bigger towns have "bad areas", what would be the areas of Austin that you would consider to be "bad" to be avoided by a good ole law abiding citizen such as myself?

And we have noticed that property taxes seem to vary a bit-are there parts (counties) that are a little more tax friendly? Also, we are looking at Round Rock-what are your thoughts about Round Rock in light of the same questions? We are looking forward to your thoughts and chatting with you here on this forum!

Greg

"Good" and "Bad" are subjective words, so I can't answer those questions for you. As for the tax questions, go to the Travis County and the Williamson County appraisal sites and you'll see the different tax rates broken down by county, city, school district, water district, college district, hospital district... get out a calculator to add all the numbers together. There are no set numbers for any one city as many split school districts.

Isn't part of RoundRock in Travis County and the other in Williamson? Not sure, that's pretty far north from me.

Yes, Round Rock splits counties which is why it splits schools, which is why I gave both appraisal district sites to look at.

I suggest looking up a sample property in the neighborhoods you're interested in on the www.traviscad.org website. You will see an itemized list of the tax rates for that particular property.

You can search by street name and just pick a property on the street.

Taxes within Travis County will vary by school district, MUD (Municipal Utility District), incorporated town (like Westlake or Lakeway), etc.
