Hello everyone,

I'm considering visiting relatives for the 4th of July. I'm concerned with the summer heat in Texas. I'm from Wisconsin, and I'm sure that the heat will be too much for me. Do you have indoor places to view the fireworks...other than your home?

Thank you in advance.

Dawn

You can rent a hotel room that faces Lady Bird Lake. Maybe someone else will know which hotel is the best for watching the Austin fireworks. We've watched fireworks from a distance while eating at the County Line on the hill.

Some of the rooms at Four Seasons and the Radisson probably have a good view. The restaraunts there do also.

The heat isn't so bad in the evening, so long as it isn't too humid. July should be a little less humid than May/June. If you are near the water (Ladybird Lake), it's a bit cooler. You might consider one of the cruise boats -- it's even cooler right on the water. I think one or two of the bigger boats might even have a/c... this one appears to: Welcome to LonestarRiverboat.com

Last year we parked next to Volente Beach and sat in the truck to watch them. Normally, we just sit outside and watch them from our house. The heat is a non issue after dark.

Headliner's Club? Someone treated us to that one year. On a more practical note, check into restaurant arrangements ahead of time, if you would like to spend the evening that way. We thought we would watch them from TGIFriday's a few years ago, only to find out there was a fee for the tables on the patio.

Really? You will be fine outside. I grew up in the Midwest and Austin heat is far easier to handle than the humidity and mosquitoes up there. I lived in Texas 12 years and never once did I not enjoy the fireworks from outside.

Speaking of the Midwest, I was just watching the College World Series (on TV) taking place in Omaha, NE... they said the heat index during the game reached 107 degrees! Everyone was cramping up, and the Texas players said it was the hottest game they had ever played in (that is saying a lot for a team from Texas).

I just looked now (10:40PM) and according to weather underground:

Omaha, NE -- 87 degrees, 100 degree heat index, 79% humidity!!

Austin, TX -- 89 degrees, 91 degree heat index, 58% humidity

I must admit, I didn't believe at first the reports about the Midwest heat being so much worse... but after watching the game today, I believe it. I'm sure these kinds of temps don't last very long in the Midwest, though.

If you can get a room in the Hyatt, its fun. But currently, the hotel is finally being updated. I would sit at Amy's Ice Cream on Congress in the back of my pickup truck eating Amy's Dirt ice cream. Far more fun and cheaper - plus, I can maybe sneak into Guerro's and have a plate of el pastor pork tacos and some Carta Blanca beer. No, it doesn't go well with ice cream but it is the 4th of July.

It's called TV! You can watch the fireworks on TV in the comfort of your AC.
