Where does "North Austin" start exactly?

North of the river?
North of downtown?
North of north of UT?
North of 290/Koenig?
North of 183/Anderson?

I saw a previous poster insinuate that everything north of the river including downtown was "North Austin". If that is the case, where is "Central Austin"? In Dallas, "North Dallas" started 10 miles north of town when you cross "Loop 12" and hit bona-fide suburbia. Are there parts south of the river considered "Central Austin" as well? The nomenclature of geographic directions and proximities in Austin still eludes me after over a year here.

I consider north of Anderson Lane to be North Austin. The line has been pushing further north for a while, however.

I consider Central Austin to be the area from the river to 45th Street, North Central as 45th to Anderson, and North Austin continues beyond that.

I agree with brattpowered as far as Anderson Lane being the dividing line, pretty much, so I guess for the purposes of your poll it would be 183.

So we know what defines east (35), west (Mopac), and central (between) - but not so sure about what defines north, central to south.

I posed the same q in Dallas:

Austin is getting really spread out and many people don't seem to be able to adjust their concepts of "north" "central" and "south" Austin. To define anything north of UT as "North Austin" these days would mean that most of the city is North Austin.

I vote for 183 as the dividing line. Above that is, to me, is north; 183 to roughly 45th is north-central; 45th to the river is central, and south of the river is...well, south.

One person I know considers central Austin to extend from Ben White to 183, and North & South Austin to be to the north and south of those two thoroughfares.

I actually agree with that person. "Central" Austin is, indeed, both north and south of the river, with downtown being the center or "Central", and 183 and Ben White are the boundaries of Central Austin north and south.

This makes sense in a way, as it would place downtown in the middle of central austin. It seems most agree that north Austin starts way north of downtown, placing downtown on the very southernmost edge of central Austin.

Interesting that the river has such an effect.

Everything south of Town Lake is South Austin, not a part of Central Austin, and we all know it. Central Austin is north of Town Lake to Anderson (where North Austin starts), with Mopac and IH35 marking west and east.
