Hello,

I have been looking for jobs on Craigslist and StatesmanJobs, but they all seem to be the same low paying genre of jobs. I am reluctant to find employment through a temp agency, but am getting desperate. Do any of you know of a good one downtown or another decent way of finding work?

Thanks for your help.

All the higher-than-entry-level jobs will be through job-specific networks, probably. If you are looking for a production engineer or a technical writer or an environmental specialist, you don't go to the statesman very often, and less so to Craig's list.

That said, what do you do?

I just moved here and was working at law firms in NYC for the past three years. While I would ideally like to stray away from strictly administrative work and jump into more creative work, I am running out of time and would be willing to take administrative work, given it pays more than 13 dollars an hour.

Hmmm...my first inclination is to say that temp agencies are the most common way to get jobs with law firms. I suspect that three years experience would get you placed pretty quick and possibly hired on in relatively short order. It is my understanding that many admin type positions are filled via temp agencies so that the employer does not have to worry about unemployment payments if they don't want to keep you. If they do, they either wait for the temp contract expires and hires you or just pays the 'fee' for hiring you away...can be a big fee, sometimes many thousands.

As for creative, that definitely is a networking type thing. I am not sure what your definition of 'creative' is (might mean just not having to answer the phones). We just filled an 'admin' position via someone who knew someone, yada yada, and it will involve quite a bit more than typical admin work.

Thank you for your input, it is much appreciated. Looks like the temp agency will be the way to go. On that note, is there one that stands out amongst the rest?

Thanks again.

I am in a similar situation. I am a financial analyst and will be completing my MBA this month. I have 1-2 years of experience as a financial analyst for a charter schools authorizer (the largest in the nation). I can't seem to find any decent finance jobs in the Austin area.

I currently live in Michigan but am looking to relocate to Austin this summer. Any ideas of where I can find decent finance jobs that aren't sales?

Doesn't need to be with charter schools, just as long as it isn't commission based. (I'm just not comfortable with commissions)

I feel as though I have exhausted craigslist, monster, and careerbuilder.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Default wages in austin

Hi Patrick,

I saw your post a feel your frustration over the wages here. The pay scale has not caught up with the cost of living .I am sorry to say ,in most lines of work, you will probobly work harder for less money. I too have an accounting background and the pay here is not what it should be. Most employers here hire kids right out of UT for less money and people like us are in direct competition for those positions. I suggest you find work at a lower rate and continue to look for a better paying position.

Also try indeed.com

Thanks for the informaiton Linda.

I have looked on indeed.com and have seen a few positons that I have applied for. My friend Joe just got a job in Austin doing what he is doing now in Detroit for $6K less a year. Hopefully having a roomate and the adjusted cost of living will help to offset the financial loss.

Thanks again for your help, I'll keep looking. Hopefully something will come up and I'll be living in Austin soon.

What is a decent job? What kind of salary range are you looking for?
