I'm thinking you have to be military, but thanks anyway (my husband stayed in the inactive reserves for several years just so he could keep is ID and use the base liquor store on Sundays when we lived in RI - and free parking at the coast guard base when we visited Boston was kind of cool too).

It's the damn religious Blue Laws: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_laws.

Another great reason to keep religion out of the government! Don't impose your morals on everyone else!

The blue laws also don't allow auto sales on Sunday by anyone other than private individuals. Car Max sells on Sunday and pays the fine, which I heard is in the thousands of dollars.

I remember going to HEB as a kid and seeing certain aisles physically blocked (cleaning supplies, the toys I wanted!) on Sundays. Fortunately, someone reversed THOSE items from the blue laws.

Really?!?!? Cars?!?!?! That explains why none of the dealerships were open on Sundays when we were looking. I couldn't figure out why not because it would seem that would be a good day for sales. Is the rationale because selling cars is the devil's work? I cannot understand why they cannot be sold. Seems crazy.

Interesting article on the Blue Laws dating way, way back.

Blue Laws
snippet:
"Although blue laws requiring Sunday church attendance disappeared in the nineteenth century because they violated citizen’ rights to religious freedoms, other blue laws have continued to exist into the modern era. In Texas, for example, blue laws prohibited selling house wares such as pots, pans, and washing machines on Sunday until 1985, and car dealerships in the state continue to operate under blue-law prohibitions. Many states still prohibit selling alcohol on Sunday, although it’s now the second busiest shopping day of the week."

Default Liquor laws lack logic

Car codes confound consumers!!!!! I couldn't resist.

You are mistaken on the Texas car sales rule. It is not against the law for dealers to sell cars on Sunday. However, they cannot be sell cars on consecutive weekend days. A dealer could open on Sunday but would have to be closed Saturday. I have seen this a few times - but not at all common.

Wow that is crazy. Since I'm Jewish, does that mean I'm immune to the blue laws? :-)

I believe you are correct but would like a reference. Still, the law is based on the old blue laws, not on logic.
