I tried that once at the beach. I put my keys way down into the toe of one shoe. My wallet in the other. Towel on top. But someone stole my shoes and left the towel and I don't know how long they were gone because I could see the towel the whole time and so I thought everything was fine.

might sound like overkill but you might be surprised at how easy it is to get into one of those wire baskets...
even if they are locked
You never want to leave anything important in your car. (phone, wallet, other keys) If your car gets stolen all of that goes with it.
