A friend will be travelling to Australia on a Subclass 676 Tourist visa from the US. He'll be leaving mid-April. This is a long-term tourist Visa granting him permission to stay in Australia for up to one year with the only limitations being that he cannot work while in Australia and he cannot enroll in any classes lasting longer than 3 months. OK.

He's heard that Australia is relatively lenient on cash-in-hand jobs for those willing to do some menial labor.

Can anyone suggest some websites or resources for him to tap into to look for cash jobs?

He's not looking to be sponsored; he's just looking for a little spending money.

Thank you!

A few more things about my friend...

His background is in IT (database management, data entry) and he's an absolute whiz at this! However, he really enjoys cooking and would like to sharpen his kitchen and cooking skills. He'd like to find work possibly as a sous chef or in food prep/catering. (His knife skills are extraordinary!) He has a place to stay and is just looking for websites that may aim him in the right direction.

He's been looking on gumtree.com and on craigslist for cash jobs.

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

There are not that many cash jobs in Oz compared to years ago, for a start you are not insured if earning cash money, and the Tax Office has tried to clamp down on this.
They would be very discreet in advertising this, you would have to go on word of mouth to find such jobs.
You are more likely to see the cash economy still active in rural areas, especially certain tradesman and some restaurants and take-away shops, which still may pay workers cash money.

If he is less than 30 years old, I don't understand why he would go on a 1 year tourist visa, instead of a working holiday visa??? The working holiday visa isn't that expensive at all and you can work legally without any hassles. For a lot of seasonal and casual work, some employers are not going to bother with an illegal worker.

There are so many people on that visa that there is not much need to hire casual people under the table, although I know a few Americans that have worked cash jobs on the downlow.

The best places to look would be at hostels which often have jobs posted or other similar travelers that know of work.

Tourist Visa (Subclass 676)

Also read the near fine print at the bottom:

If granted, this visa will allow you either a single or multiple entry to Australia for a stay period of up to three, six or 12 months.
The period of stay and number of entries granted will depend on the purpose of the visit and your personal circumstances.

If he's independently wealthy, great, but when you enter on a one year stay expect to get asked at immigration how you intend to live for a year with no income.

Wanneroo has it right - just because a visa entitles your friend to stay up to a year doesn't mean that he will have his stay authorized for that long once he actually enters the country.

Very few/between nowdays and within good reason!
If you want a decent well-paying job then you'll have to sign up with the ATO (Australian Taxation Office) and it's fair that you pay taxes like the rest of us.
I dislike people coming here, getting cash in hand jobs and us footing the bill for medical and government pensions for them - not on in my eyes!
