Americans and Australians get along well because of similar cultural aspects. There seems to be two criticisms I've come across about Americans - either that they're loud and arrogant and always showing off, or the actions of their government / capitalism's effect on the world. The irony is, is that Australians are just as loud and arrogant and our government is just as aggressive to other nations/as capitalistic, we just aren't large enough to have much of a profound effect.
Australia also suffers greatly from tall poppy syndrome, so America being the most wealthy and powerful country in the world will naturally receive criticism from Australia.
They both share the beer drinking/sports culture.I heard about the Australian wine is famous across the world.

I hear what you say and many other folk here in Australia seem to state the same with regards to the Tall Poppy Syndrome, but i find a lot of interest in celebrities out here as well as so many folk, many of limited ability, wanting positions of power,no matter how minor that position may be in order to enable them to lord it over others.

I would be suprised if 7/10 americans you asked got more then 3 correct

no disrespect intended but thats how we aussises view americans
As an American I hate to say it but I agree with you.... At least from the standpoint our younger generation seems to be clueless as to a world existing outside of our borders.

I had the fortunate opportunity recently to test my accent on an actual Australian and he thought I was British...yargh
Sure your not getting a little confused with a Brit accent there, which comes in many shapes and forms?

Australians often seem to confuse Swedish and Swiss have found,so perhaps not so unusual that Australians and Austrians get confused as well.

Confusing them on paper might be forgivable but actually confusing the countries? One is a tiny alpine nation in Europe, one is a flat, dry continent. Yeah, so confusing!

True enough, but then again Australia doesn't get a lot of news coverage abroad...but one would have thought that awareness levels would be higher these days...and wouldn't imagine Austria gets much coverage either.

Aussie Gal,

the school I went to in Wollongong had over 50 nationalities represented. The number would be closer to 180 for the entire nation. Aussies with at least some Irish blood in them make up ~30% of the population.
