Excuse my ignorance, but what is a 457 visa? Is it just a temporary working visa or something?

What field of work are you in?

I'd love to do something similar in the states. There used to be opportunities for us in the rail industry to do an exchange type program, but I think that has died since we (NSW Freight) were privatised in 2002 and with the US economic conditions I doubt there would be an opportunity any time soon.

I am in the medical profession and I work as a blood transfusion specialist.

You should look into it even though the US is not doing well...some areas are and will always do well...your area might be one of those.

OK I will sort of be the new kid in town! Being silly once again!

Does this mean you successfully got your visa? If so congrats TVC15!

I hope you and your partner enjoy Australia, make lots of mates and enjoy your work. Sydney is a beautiful place, I'm sure you'll fall in love with it in no time . Plenty of nice scenic places you can ride your bike. Let us know how it goes.

Btw New Kid in Town is my favourite Eagles song .
