However, I wouldn't classify all of them as politically correct, based on their shockingly blunt opinions and very politically incorrect jokes they've made about Aboriginals, Asians and Muslims.
Just one example.... one Aussie couple ranted to my husband and I about how people of a certain demographic group "breed like flies" and that white people like us need to keep up to prevent them from taking over.
Of course, the handful of Australians we encountered are likely not reflective of most. Hubby and I both have a penchant for attracting the loonier outliers of the bunch, which is how we ended up with each other.
The US though has more issues with actual racism imo, but people here tend to be insanely politically correct unless you're close friends or family.
Shocked. In England, Australia has a repuatation for being very racist. I still remember being at a resturant in central London, where I overhead a girl warning her black friend not to move to Australia due to extreme racism. Never been Australia, so not sure if true or whether the study in the OP is accurate.

You could look at that incident from a different perspective...and reach a very different conclusion.
Australia is not a racist country and I would know because I live here. Australians will have an opinion on topics and aren't scared to voice this but it is one of the most tolerant countries. People seem to forget that Australia gets its population from all corners of the globe. A lot of people that claim Australia is racist have never lived here so really how much do you know about the country?
At least in Australia people are more open and things can be discussed unlike some other so called enlightened countries where everything simmers underneath and nothing is discussed in the open.

Pretty much this. You'd struggle to find many people who actually harbour deep prejudices towards people based on race in Australia. However, I understand why some people from outside Australia might be inclined to think there is a lot of racism here based on what they hear Australians say. Some of my best friends are from non-English speaking backgrounds (Vietnamese, Sri Lankan, Indian, etc) and I'll be the first to admit we take the **** out of each other with racially-based jokes, but its all light-hearted banter.
If say an American was a fly on the wall listening to conversations like that I can understand why they might think it's hateful, racist, won't somebody think of the children etc. We just have a different, more laid-back sense of humour here.
