Some girls here in australia do call call guys mate. I personally find it very annoying, its a masculine sign of a women who talks this way. mate is what aussie men call eachother. sheilas is an obsolete term here hardly ever used anymore.Us amazingly handsome Aussie guys call girls chicks, hot ,dogs or babes ,hags or ******* never a sheila.
Yes, I've heard women call men and other women mate. Not overly common but certainly not unusual. I don't believe I ever have though. Lady down the road who runs the deli always addresses everybody as 'Mate'. I don't mind it.
I've heard some people warn foreigners to not call unknown women "Sheilas" and I was curious why...
Is it actually offencive?
I can see it being similar to "chick", which is primarily offencive to feminists.
Or is it merely viewed as "antiquated" most of the time?
*I find most American slang terms boring (especially ones overrused by Hollywood )
and would prefer to use (appropriate) Aussie terms should I visit Australia.
Obviously it's ok for sheilas to call blokes mate as far as I'm concerned.
As for unknown foreigners calling me sheila, well I guess it depends on the circumstances but generally when it has happened it's been because some one was wanting to be antagonistic, so obviously I'm not overly impressed by its use then.
My Dad and his mates will still say, "You sheilas" but it's always tongue in cheek.

I hope it comes back into fashion. I'm getting a bit tired of the generic American girl/guy .
