Are Auckland NZ and San Diego CA very similar cities? I repeatedly hear comparisons and I would like to get some direct input from the Kiwis out there.

I see the coastal temperate sailing resemblance I suppose...

Nah. San Diego has great weather, solidly built houses and is located in a first world country...

I've only been to Auckland once for a full day and an overnight stopover. Rented a car, drove around quite a bit. Very pretty, particularly the outskirts, but didn't see much similarity to San Diego where I've been at least a dozen times.

The only thing they share in common is the Pacific Ocean.

I can't see too much similarity either.

For starters, New Zealand gets cold. But I do rather like Auckland, just the same.

16% of San Diegans speak Spanish at home
15% of NZ is Maori and most on the north island (only 1/4 of Maori speak Te Reo)

I've spent time in both cities.. nothing alike..

No. The two cities are completely different in almost every respect.

Auckland is cold and rainy year round, San Diego is warm and sunny year round. Auckland gets about 5 times San Diego's annual rainfall and is colder day and night every month of the year, not to mention much, much cloudier.
