............in trying to hype up the #88 as their driver to carry the "chosen one" torch into the future. I noticed today each time the 88 took the lead the camera would pan back and you could hear the fans cheering. This isn't the first time I've seen this but it dawned on me today what NASCAR was doing.
Hmmm... is it possible that they want to showcase how the proud Jr Nation comes to life at the appropriate times to support the MOST POPULAR DRIVER???
Bingo. The fans are the ones buying his merchandise and cheering for him in the stands. They're the ones who drive his popularity, not NASCAR or the broadcast crew.
Its all part of the selling of the sport. JR is popular and when ever he leads a lap the fans go wild. Showing it on TV is in part salesman ship tactics so people that are new to the sport or that are flipping channels will see the excitement.
Back in 09 we went to the Atlanta fall race, our seats were OK for the price, apx $100 each. At the gate they asked us if we wanted to upgrade our seats for an additional $20. There reason was that the on TV seats that had sold for $200 were not purchased, NASCAR wanted to fill those seats for TV visibility. We got 4th row start finish.

Uhh...I think you mean #8, Dale Earnhardt Jr. And yeah, NASCAR & the media do tend to over-hype him a bit, but hey, he is the fans' favorite among current drivers, usually eclipsing Jimmy Johnson, Jeff Gordon, and Tony Stewart in any survey they ever do. So basically NASCAR is merely playing to its fan base.
Also, today's Daytona 500 was the anniversery of his Dad's death at that same track, and I kinda thought the whole raise-up-three-fingers'on-the-third-lap deal was pretty cool.

He may be the most popular driver, but he is not the only one with a large fan base. Other drivers deserve the same camera 'shout out' when they take the lead. It may lend more excitement then just showing one driver who, since going to arguably the best team in the business, is a threat to lead at only 2 tracks.

The problem is the fans don't respond to the other guys taking the lead like they do to Earnhardt. I was at the Dickies 500 in 2009 and while Dale didn't lead a lap that day, the only times people hooted and hollared were when a) Jimmie Johnson crashed on the 3rd lap, and b) Kyle Busch ran out of gas 3 laps from the end.

I still can't figure out what there is to "hate" about Dale Jr.
Sure, they guy got into racing because of his Daddy. What is wrong with that? There are a lot of racers that have son's that they have groomed to follow their footsteps. Heck, that happens in a LOT of professions.
Fans like Jr. because of his Dad? Don't see a problem with that...especially how his Dad died and how popular his Dad was. But Sr has been gone for 10 years now...Jr hasn't lived up to they hype that was created by the media and NASCAR....but his fans still support him. (Loyalty).
Jr is not a media hound. He is a humble guy with a famous Dad. I honestly feel that he doesn't really like all of the attention he gets. He is basically a hermit, living on his ranch in NC. Over the winter instead of going to the SuperBowl or Hawaii like some drivers, he stayed on his ranch and built his mom a new home... Pretty humble I say.
